How is Undeliverable and and Misdelivered mail handled
What to do when mail is undeliverable or misdelivered. Information and additional resources regarding endorsements that may prevent delivery, picking up mail early before it is delivered, postage due and mail sent to an individual at a business address.
How is ‘Postage Due’ mail handled?
Throughout its journey, mail may be periodically checked to ensure it has proper postage. If a mailpiece does not have proper postage, it may be returned or delivered according to the following scenarios:
- If the item is without postage, or it appears postage fell off; it is endorsed “Returned for Postage Mail” and sent to the return address on the mailpiece.
- If the item is shortpaid, it will be delivered postage due and the letter carrier will endorse it to show the amount of the postage due.
- The recipient must pay in cash for postage due mail before the mail is delivered
- Depending on location, letter carriers may or may not be able to collect Postage Due directly from a customer or a customer’s mailbox. For further information on how to pay for the Postage Due, please contact your local Post Office™ facility.
- Rural carriers are not required to go to the door with a postage due letter. Policy stipulates that rural carriers go only as far as the mailbox and blow the horn. The recipient must come out to the mailbox to pay and receive the letter.
- Note: If the shortpaid item cannot be delivered as addressed (including if the recipient refuses to pay for and accept it), it is endorsed “Returned for Additional Postage” and sent to the return address on the mailpiece.
A returned shortpaid mailpiece can have the necessary additional postage affixed (leaving the “postage due” message intact) to the original piece and does not have to be placed in a new envelope or wrapper.
Please Note: The USPS® makes a special effort when the mail piece has the appearance of a greeting card. Rather than being routed to the Mail Recovery Center because of no postage or below minimum size, greeting cards without a return address will generally be delivered with postage due during the month of December. (This is for domestic First-Class Mail® only. Foreign greeting cards without postage go back to the mailer for proper postage.)
Note: Automated Package Verification (APV) streamlines how we check postage on certain packages with labels generated from Click-N-Ship® and PC Postage applications (PC Postage applications include Click-N-Ship, Endicia, Stamps.com, eBay, PayPal, EasyPost, and Pitney Bowes® & ePostage). Please see “Automated Package Verification Program” for more information.
Can I pick up mail before it is delivered?
Unfortunately mail cannot be picked up before it’s delivered. The United States Postal Service system is set up to deliver mail, it is not able to retain mail so that you can come in and pick it up.
There are services (which charge additional fees) that would allow you to pickup your mail on a regular basis at the Post Office. These are:
- Purchase a Post Office Box – Mail is considered delivered when it reaches the box.
How do I apply for a Post Office Box? - Caller services – Businesses can have their employees pick up their mail.
What are Caller and Reserve Box Services? - Some packages with a tracking number may qualify for Delivery Instructions,

Informed Delivery-The Basics
As an Informed Delivery user, you can opt-in to receive daily emails to the email address in your USPS.com account containing images of the address side of up to 10 pieces of incoming letter mail as well as the status of incoming and outbound packages.
While only the first 10 pieces of mail appear in your Daily Digest email, the remaining mail images can be viewed on your dashboard for a 7-day period. The Daily Digest email will not always show all packages destined to your address that day (e.g., items scanned into our system after the email has been sent). Outbound packages will only display on your Informed Delivery email if your account return address is included on the package and the package is within 3 days of its expected delivery date. There is a limit of 20 outbound packages that can be displayed on your email each day.
Mail Delivery Notifications
The Mail Delivery Notification feature sends an email notification alerting you that your daily letter mail has been delivered to your mailbox. These notifications rely on data from our letter carrier’s scanning devices and are sent within approximately 30 minutes of your mail being delivered. These emails are separate from your Informed Delivery Daily Digest emails, and will not appear in your Informed Delivery dashboard.
To opt in to receive Mail Delivery Notification emails, or to manage other Informed Delivery notifications, log into your Informed Delivery account and go to “Settings”. You can opt out at any time in Informed Delivery settings, or by clicking on the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the Mail Delivery Notification email.
If your Mail Delivery Notification is not accurate, you may complete the survey found at the bottom of the email. You may also email USPSInformedDeliveryQuestions@usps.gov.
Please note the following:
- Notifications are not available for PO Box addresses
- APO/FPO/DPO ZIP Codes are not eligible for MDN.
- Notifications do not guarantee that a specific piece of mail seen in your Daily Digest was delivered that day
- Notifications can only be sent by email
- Notifications will only be sent if you have mail content in your Daily Digest email; mail could still be delivered to your home even if you did not receive a Daily Digest email or have any mail displayed on your Informed Delivery dashboard that day.

Scams and Schemes Alerts
Common Scams & Schemes
Smishing / Texting Schemes
“Smishing”, a form of phishing, is an unsolicited SMS (text) message. Victims will typically receive a deceptive text message that is intended to lure the recipient into providing their personal or financial information. These scams often attempt to impersonate a government agency, bank, or other company to lend legitimacy to their claims.
Common lures include “your account has been suspended”, “there is suspicious activity on your account”, “there is a problem with your shipping address” and “there is a package waiting for you at the Post Office.”
To report USPS-related smishing:
- Please visit the United States Postal Inspection Service® smishing page at https://www.uspis.gov/news/scam-article/smishing/ for additional information and reporting steps.
- The Federal Trade Commission at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov
- The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center (ic3) at https://www.ic3.gov/Home/ComplaintChoice
Email Scams
Email scams can claim to be from the U.S. Postal Service and contain fraudulent information about an attempted or intercepted package delivery or online postage charges. They usually contain a link or attachment that, when opened, installs a malicious virus or malware that can steal personal information from the customer’s computer. The message is made to appear to originate from a number of false USPS.com email accounts.
To report email scams:
- Reporting instructions and additional information regarding email scams can be found at https://www.uspis.gov/news/scam-article/fake-usps-emails.
